A Few Words from Mark, Managing Director of Design Builders Wellington
Q: What stands out most as you approach your 10th year?
“It’s been incredible to see how far we’ve come. We’ve built strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and our team, and that’s what’s made the difference. Every home tells its own story, and we’ve had the privilege of helping so many people bring theirs to life, including clients who’ve come back to build with us again.”
Q: What’s next for Design Builders Wellington?
“We’re continuing to grow and refine what we do best, designing homes that are truly one-off. We’ve got some really exciting projects on the go, from contemporary rural builds to coastal escapes, and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead.”
Q: You also achieved recognition at the recent Master Builders House of the Year Awards, tell us about that.
“Winning Gold at the Wellington & Wairarapa 2025 House of the Year Awards was a huge highlight for the team. The home, which we nicknamed the ‘Spider Home’, was a real engineering and design challenge, built high on a steep Wellington hillside, supported by steel foundations that make it appear to float above the ground.
At just 153 square metres, it proves that exceptional design doesn’t have to mean enormous scale. It’s warm, refined, and filled with custom details like timber-lined ceilings, built-in furniture, and a stunning feature screen for hanging plants. The exterior combines dark steel and vertical timber with solar shrouds and screening, it’s a compact home that balances sustainability with serious style.
To see that level of craftsmanship recognised with a Gold Award was really rewarding. And to top it off, achieving a strong B FINZscore™ rating gives us, and our clients, extra confidence that we’re financially strong and built for the long term.”
What is FINZscore™?
Developed by CreditWorks in partnership with Registered Master Builders New Zealand, FINZscore™ helps identify financially sound builders across the country. It independently assesses key financial indicators, such as stability, management, and performance, and converts them into an easy-to-understand grade from A (very strong) to E (high risk).
For clients, it’s another layer of reassurance that their builder is financially secure, responsibly managed, and here for the long term.
