“If You Can’t Find It, You’ve Got to Build It”
For Glen and Tor Daniels, building a new home wasn’t originally the plan. After returning to New Zealand following almost 18 years overseas, they began searching for a property that would suit their lifestyle.
What they quickly discovered was that the type of home they wanted simply wasn’t available.
They were looking for a home with a relatively compact footprint but generous living spaces – somewhere that prioritised the kitchen, dining and living areas while still providing comfortable accommodation. They also wanted a strong connection to the outdoors and spaces that would be enjoyable to spend time in every day.
Rather than compromise, they chose to build. That’s when they partnered with Design Builders Canterbury.
A Collaborative Approach
From the beginning, Glen says the process felt different.
The ability to openly discuss ideas, explore options and work through challenges together gave them confidence that their vision was being understood.
As the project developed, changes and refinements were made along the way. Whether it was adjusting layouts or navigating building requirements, communication remained clear and responsive.
Having design and construction working closely together meant decisions could be made quickly, keeping the project moving without unnecessary delays.
Being Part of the Journey
One aspect of the experience that stood out for Glen was being involved throughout the build.
Spending time on site allowed him to watch the home take shape and see the progress being made firsthand. The relationships built with the team on site helped make the experience enjoyable and reinforced the sense that everyone was working towards the same goal.
Rather than feeling like another project, the Daniels family felt genuinely involved in the process.
A Home Designed Around Lifestyle
Today, the finished home delivers exactly what Glen and Tor hoped for.
The spacious living areas, thoughtful design and connection to the outdoors have created a home that supports the way they live and entertain.
Most importantly, the finished result reflects their original vision.
As Glen puts it, “If you can’t find it, you’ve got to build it.”
For homeowners considering a new build, their story is a reminder that sometimes the best way to achieve the home you truly want is to create it from the ground up.
